Nice post Smooth2 however........

"We are no longer British or American or Australian or Dutch or Sth African or Norwegian or all the other nationalities I've not mentioned. Even the Thai's know this !!  FARANG !!  One word describes 300 Nationalities."

Can someone answer. Is a chinese expat regarded as a Farang?

Farang is a white boy only.     http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farang
Just because it's on wikipedia, doesn't make it so.....thats just someone's opinion

A well researched opinion. I was actually responsible for some of that Wiki page.

Not so long ago I completed a Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Linguistic and Phonetic studies. One of my assignments was to chooses a word from a foreign language, one that is widely used by other nationalities too, and research its origins.

There is a plethora of information on the internet. The one that really sticks out is the one on Wiki, similar to what I posted on here. The dates all tally and the reasoning seems very plausible.

Having said that, I did say "it is widely believed that....."

It certainly is not derived from the Thai pronunciation of Francais. That would detract from the fact that most neighbouring countries use a similar word for the same meaning.

The question about Turkish nationality.....It would all depend on your appearance. I know a guy from Iran that gets called a "farang" because he has a more Western appearance that Middle Eastern.
Apologies if I have offended you Steve....that wasn't my intention....
I was just trying to make a point that just because something is stated on a website doesn't mean that it's true.....

No problems at all.

I agree that Wiki is not always accurate. Even most educational establishments know this and ban students from citing info from Wiki.

That is one of the reasons that  helped with that particular page.

A "wiki" is a special kind of application that allows public editing and revising. Wikipedia is the most famous.

There are no set rules by any Internet governing body or watchdog laying out to what degree the public can edit. This means that on some occasions the text may be incorrect or in accurate. It also leads to some subjects being reported with an element of bias by the author.

There is also no ownership with such articles. This is not a blog,a thesis or an article; where authors names, dates of entry, and title have to be published.

It is therefore prohibited by many educational establishments to use such a source for an educational assignment. The main reason being the inaccuracy. The other reason being that in order to use secondary research information one has to cite the source. This must include; name of author, date of publication and name of publication. As Wikipedia is not a publication it can't be used.

Any educational establishments that adhere to the Laws of Plagiarism.

There are many examples of these.

A simple search on the internet will most likely come up with the information you are looking for.

Sorry ,but' my simple search on the internet' did not come up with the information I asked you to provide. Basically the names of the said institutions. As you say' most' and then 'many', I expected to be overwhelmed with lists. Alas it was not to be.

I do admit that I am not as proficient as some in finding information on the internet. Please advise. Thanks in advance.

Any accredited establishments will have to follow this law.

Search for "accredited universities", for example. There will be many. Anti plagiarism is all part and parcel of accreditation.

Thank you.
And out of interest, would any educational establishments , in Buriram or Thailand ,have this ban on students from citing info from Wiki?''
And please bare with me, as the reason I ask is that this is the first time I've read or heard  anything about a ban on students citing wiki

You would have to ask youself the question.....Is plagiarism veiwed as an acedemic crime in those places that you mentioned?

That is where the answer to your query lies.

Or, does correct spelling really matter in the context of a healthy discussion.
