If he has a 6 month or a 1 year 'O' multientry,.....then you have to go out of the country to get your visa extended.

Why not apply for a tourist visa before you travel.

Thanks i understand.But being from Africa air tickets becomes a problem price wise when one is not sure of one,s dates.Whilst i am in Buriram i may decide to stay longer and that is why i am enquiring what to do.

The only way you can extend is if you are married to a Thai national, have a child here in Thailand or if you have a serious medical condition that means you cannot travel.

Under those grounds you can extend a 30 day stamp for a further 60 days. The price is 1900baht. Otherwise you can only extend for 7 days also for 1900 baht.

I'm a little unsure as whether you are actually in Thailand already, as your 1st post indicated, or whether you are still in Africa, as your next couple of posts about airfares indicated ?? If you are still in Africa, the following may be helpful.

It is my understanding that you will require a fully paid return air ticket to get into Thailand, whether you decide to get the Visa on Arrival, or arrange a Tourist Visa from your home country first.

If you decide to get a Tourist Visa from your home country, one of the docs the Thai Embassy will require is a copy of your return flight details, before they ok your Tourist Visa. As the TV is 60 days (+30 day extension once in Thai), you can book your forward & return flight to be maximum 60 days apart.

You have not indicated what African country you reside in, but Sth Africans can get 30 day Visa on Arrival at Bangkok Airport. Before giving you a VOA, Thai Immi have the right to ask to see your outbound fully paid confirmed flight details. If you are unable to do so, they have the right to refuse you entry into Thailand.

So in reality, you will need a return flight booked before you leave Africa. The trick is to book a return flight that has the flexibility to be changed, if you decide to extend your stay in Thailand. Most airlines offer flights with flexibility to change , or even cancel, the return flight date ... but it will certainly cost you for the priviledge. Check with your favourite airline BEFORE you book ... that they can/will change/cancel your return flight at some later date if you choose to do so.

Also, check that your favourite airline can do any changes/cancellations easily online. Some of them only allow these changes/cancellations to be done over the counter at their office in BKK, or BKK Airport.

The simplest choice is the Visa on Arrival. You will get 30 days to have a good time.

If, nearing 30 days, you decide to extend a bit longer, then you have a couple of choices. You can walk over the border at Chong Chom into Cambodia, and straight back into Thailand again. This will give you an extra 15 days.

Or, you can go to the Thai Consul in Savannakhet in Laos, and apply for a 60 day Tourist Visa to get you immediately back into Thailand. (After your 60 day TV visa is up, you can get a 30 day extension at Chong Chom Immi in Thailand ... thus giving you 90 days on this Tourist Visa ... and 4 months total in Thailand... 30 days VOA + 90 days TV)

You can change/cancel your outbound flight date depending on what option above you choose.

All of the above is only my opinion, based on experience for someone who is unsure of how long they wish to stay in LOS. It worked for me. No problem.

Most of the long stay guys in Thailand will have very different, and more complex, visas to what you are enquiring about.

I just don't get why people insist upon coming into Thailand, relying on the 30 day "visa exempt entry permit", when they may want to stay longer?

Getting a proper 60 day tourist visa is as easy as can be, and can be extended for another 30 days.

Time constraints...maybe, but the longest turnaround I've ever experienced with the application is around 5 days, via the postal service in the U.S.   Granted, I pay the extra $40 for the "overnight mail" service, but it's worth it.

It just seems too easy, to not do.

Very often we all talk about the same things but use slightly different terminology. We know what we are talking about but it can confuse others.

As always, I will stand to be corrected but you cannot extend a Non-Immigrant 'O" multiple entry visa by going out of the country - or to an immigration office. A 12 month Non-Imm 'O' gives you permission to enter Thailand in that 12 month period. The 'discretion of the immigration officer' normally gets you 'permission to stay' for 90 days. It is this permission to stay that is extended by 90 days each time you leave and re-enter the country - in fact MUST leave every 90 days.

It is also that permission to stay that is extended if you apply by virtue of marriage or retirement i.e. the extension is off the permission granted on the original visa.
