Why Schaefer’s Appointment at Muang Thong Marks the End of Worawi

In his time as Thai national coach, Winnie Schaefer has had a prickly, at best, relationship with Worawi Makudi. Like a couple who marry in haste then repent at leisure, their union has been unravelling since the Suzuki Cup final when, despite playing with a stronger team, the Thais were unable to overcome Singapore hampered by, among other things, poor preparation and a national stadium taken out of action for car racing.

Like a messy divorce, the end of Winnie’s reign has been ugly and protracted. When he spoke to Thai League Football in February, his boss took the chance to snipe back that his coach shouldn’t be talking to the press but him. As divorce lawyers are fond of saying, fighting couples are not the problem: it’s when they stop fighting that the divorce papers need to be drafted. During the last three months barely a direct word has passed between the couple, with only the media getting one side of the conversation and relaying it to the other. Unfortunately, when one of them was asking for the salt, the message received was, “let’s not spare the Tabasco.”

So why does Winnie’s arrival at SCG Muang Thong United spell the end for Worawi? Although he doesn’t like to mention it, Worawi used to be a powerful part of the current Thai Premier League champions and enjoys a very close relationship with the club’s owners. When the FAT Head had his little local difficulty in the last election, he received a great deal of support from the northern Bangkok giants and Siam Sport, who own Muang Thong and a huge media empire, have a five year contract to support the Football Association of Thailand. It would be in their interests to keep well away from anyone criticising their man.

In normal circumstances, Schaefer would be cast out of Thai football and every effort made to stop him coaching at club level in the Kingdom. He would be seen as poisonous and a dangerous voice criticising the cozy world of the non performing football governing body. But now things are different. Winged by his embarrassing AFC defeat and openly criticised and nominated against by political heavyweight and Buriram Chairman Newin Chidchop, the past is now coming back to haunt the embattled Dear Leader. He can no longer go to the English FA to pull a famous name out of the hat to coach the country and save his skin after his double dealing with England’s World Cup bid. With the arrival of Newin Chidchop on the football scene, his record of dragging the national team down to historic lows stands in stark contrast to Buriram’s preparations for the AFC Champions League quarter finals on August 21st.

Worawi’s allies can see the damage his reign causes to Thai football and, like any political power, are preparing to fire up the shredder, smile and take two steps back the next time he visits. It appears that the former Teflon coated leader is left with only two choices: stand for reelection and be battered by Newin’s nomination Virat Chanpanich, or slip away un – nominated to beg for indulgence from his friends at FIFA.

He will lash out and look to save his skin with all his remaining political capital, but even his allies have grown tired of his ineptitude and are furiously rewriting history. “Worawi Makudi? I think we have heard his name, but we never met…”

WHY visit this web site ?
Because it's an excellent source of information, news, and opinions on Thai football. As evidenced by 4 of the 6 posts before my comment being copied and pasted directly across here. (And a couple of posts earlier, a link to the site)

Quote
this web site & YOUR WEB SITE IS ANTI-Buriram
Ignoring the tautology, rubbish. I challenge you to show evidence of this. And I mean, a consistent anti-Buriram position, not a couple of sarcastic throw-away comments.

Quote
everytime someone posted something you & Greg did not like ie the TRUTH about muang thong utd YOU DELETED the post ?
Yawn.. I assume you're referring to the completely unrelated forum. Again, complete rubbish. Personally, I never deleted any posts. As far as I'm aware, binnsy's post calling me a wanker is still there. I didn't like that.

on this web site we can post what we want
And get repeatedly banned for it, but create a new username almost immediately. But I suppose that's my fault, too.
