Scooter helmets
« on: January 07, 2013, 08:29:34 AM »
Just stood outside with a coffee watching traffic go by. Started counting scooter riders with helmets ... or not.

Not sure how many scooters went past, but I counted every rider for a couple of minutes.

49 with helmets
61 without helmets

44% had helmets. It's not perfect, but seems to be an encouraging figure to me. Maybe the message is starting to sink in ?

I did the same thing in PKC a while back and got 50%

Go into the villages and I doubt it will be 25%.

I wold expect Muang Buriram to be over 66%

Exclude kids going to school! !!

As I said in the other thread 'I think there has been a vast improvement in the wearing of crash helmets over the last year or two compared to when I first came to live here'
But to be honest how many of US that ride small scooters put a helmet on every-time we got on it ???.If I go into town I always wear a helmet but more often than not if I'm just nipping over to see a friend in the next village I seldom put one on.As I live out in the sticks I know there is no Police and the roads are quiet so I don't bother. How many of US do the same if we are really honest ??? .
Same as car drivers wearing seat-belts,speaking on the phone and of course speeding. If the car drivers on this forum didn't brake the law then why do we have thread or shouts on the shout box warning people of Police road checks and speed camera's.
I think we are all guilty to some extent and as we should know better maybe we are worse than the Thais!!!

I don't wear a helmet within our small village where meeting another vehicle is very rare and speeds are low.  Going beyond our village, absolutely wear helmets.
My step daughter takes a motorsy to school in Lahansai each morning; she gets 5,000B for each 4.0's; 2,500B for 3.5's; and minus 5,000B anytime she rides out of the village without a helmet; which, she hasn't done, so far.  I hope she always remembers.

Why exclude kids going to school. If you can't teach them while they're young, you never will.

With kids I blame not just the kids themselves, but the police, the perents/guardians and above all the schools for letting them in to school premises.

We are all hitting our heads against brick walls if we think that the police, schools or even parents will accept the responsibilities they should have.

However I blame them for every accident, and if the government is serious about reducing traffic accidents, it is the schools where they could start. Just tell the kids they must show a driving licence to enable them to enter school premises, and that they and only 1 passenger MUST have crash helmets...........on their heads!!!
