Now up to 71.

New Year road death toll rises to 71

December 29, 2012 1:01 pm

The first two days of seven dangerous New Year Holidays saw71 people killed and 826 injured, the road safety management committee announced Saturday.
The second day of the seven-day period or on Friday, 495 road accidents were reported and 38 people were killed and 504 others injured.

Drunk driving remained the biggest cause of the accidents. The committee said 32.32 per cent of the accidents involved drunk driving.

I wonder what the penalties will be for those that caused accidents and did not die. We read that 32% of accidents involved drunk driving.

I would hope that custodial sentences are meted out to the 32% minus those that died + a minimum 5 year ban on driving.

Of course that is wishful thinking. There will be minimal fines, and no doubt those having to pay will have done it many times before!

Worrying that twice as many accidents were caused by sober drivers.

This could give rise to a 'gun law type poll' - if drink driving was decriminalised it could lead to less accidents as there would be fewer sober drivers...........

as with guns most people that are licensed do the right thing
what about unlicensed or dangerous driving ie. to fast
It always makes me wonder why you have to overtake buses and slow drivers on the left side

in Australia being able to drive or shoot is not a right, its a privilege.

The missing factor in your post, with respect, Myrtle, is education.

The drivers that stay in the outside lanes continuously (and I would estimate them to be more than 50% of all motorists, are totally unaware that they should not be there.

They should be fined off the roads! A driving blitz is needed - not piecemeal stopping motorbikes for no helmets and taking 100bt!

absolutely correct...it is a privilege that has responsibilities. Better licencing and training before people hit the road....loss of licence for multiple or major infringement, of course the boys in brown would have to pick up the ball on that.

All very good points. Most people have to pass a test or meet set criteria to obtain a licence for anything..

Not in Thailand!  Fail a test, pay 500 Baht. - get a licence.

I have an English language version of the Thai highway code. Well written, sponsored by H.M. - I doubt more than 5% of Thais. Have read it.

Interestingly it is legal to overtake on the inside lane in the US and it is something that I quiet like when I drive over there.
