When will it stop????  My guess it will not.  Run out of money?  There is always Thai Farmers Bank...she can get loan and you're good for it, right?

Which brings me to a question and I hope I can get some good feedback.  My TW wants me to put a new roof on her mom's home because it leaks badly and the wood on the inside of the house is "moldy" she says.  She tells me that mom already has a 150,000 baht loan at the bank, and if we send money to pay off the loan, she will take out another loan for 250,000 baht which is what she needs to have the roof and upstairs walls dismantled, wood "prepped and reused" and a new fiber sheet roof put on similar to the photos on here.  I am all for the roof, and can see spending 50.000 baht, but 250,000 baht seems out of control.    Does anyone have any feedback regarding the plan to dismantle the upper level of this home and rebuild?  Is this typical?  So far I have held my ground and said NO WAY.  Of course she is angry with me now.  I told her to do the research and I want to see the documents.  I checked with a builder who said he was not interested in the job and could give me no idea of the cost. HELP!

Dave I went to the local hardware store, and the owner of the store contacted a builder for me who was prepared to quote....was a decent builder, and price.

Don't forget to think about insulation when you have the roof off.
I agree about IQ and Thaiwatsadu I must say. And Homepro come to that.

I think Nookie will have some 'feedback' for you.

He may suggest that you paint the roof green ;)

I guess you fellas have been through all this as well.  I am seeing the light.  The guilt trip is now on..."don't worry about it, Mom says if this causes us problems, she does not need new roof."  This is just the way of the world that we have put ourselves into I am afraid.  Still though, if I can get a new roof at good price I don't mind doing it for them.  I am just a bit concerned about the rebuilding of the second story.  Still looking for help with that.  Thanks all for the posts.

DeputyDavid, its good of you to help the old people.
Its not such a big deal for us(falangs) but the parents would certainly appreciate a new roof.

Cheers.

 :)

It is a big deal when you are paying 4 times over the odds for something. You are putting a marker down and exposing the limits of your willingness to spend. Not saying it is happening here but I know have several examples where Farangs have paid over 6m Baht for a 3m Baht house.

Commendable to replace a leaking roof for the in laws - budget max 60,000 Baht. Would a Thai spend 250k on replacing a roof - would they fcuk.

As stevo has said they are plenty of half-decent Thai 'builders' around who could accomplish this task within a sensible budget.

Remember, if a Thai lady can get you to buy 5 buffalo, she will not settle for 1. Buy 1 buffalo and you are setting the controls and limits of your willingness to spend - buy 5 buffalo and you are fcuked forever.
