Living on 30,000 baht a month in Isaan
« on: November 04, 2012, 11:32:41 AM »
I plan on making the move to Isaan in a couple of years. Wife of 20+ years already owns the land, we will build a house and buy a car with cash. Plan is to budget 30,000 baht per month for living expenses and bank the rest of my retirement pay each month.  I value the opinion of the Buriram expats, is this doable?

I could easily get by on 30,000 a month. However it all depends if your wife has eXpensive tastes or habits?

I suspect after 20+ years you are well aware of her financial shortcomings, if any.

This subject has been done sooooo many time before and there are always many different answers. I personally think 30000 is a good amount of money here.

For me...house, car. 3 motorbikes all paid for.I don't have "farang" television. I have a 3g internet connection. We have fans in all rooms. I don't have air con because I don't like it. I have one daughter at government school. We eat very well, and I drink well!!!! All well within the figure you have mentioned.

Life is getting dearer here each passing year.

As Starman says it is do-able, as long as you don't have expensive habits like regular drinking and eating farang food.

Canadians?  What about avoiding drinking with the Aussies, I think those guys  must be born with multiple livers.

Seriously thanks for the replies and opinions.

30,000 Baht each month is the goal for the monthly budget, our monthly income will be more than this amount, and we plan on saving each month. We will also have money in the bank just in case of emergencies.

I eat home cooked Thai food most days now (in Hawaii).

That comment was not meant as a pop at you as your stuff is very reasonably priced, but when I am running short of cash, Its farang food and beer that is cut out.

I can have a small meal in my wokplace for 20b or 30b in most other Thai restaurants. Thats just my pesonal experience and the way I live, thats all.

I now refuse to eat Thai 'shit' - I enjoy roadside fare but in Isaan too many places use inferior quality products. I will only pay 40 Baht for.a pad krapow if I know the restaurant. Best ever Pad krapow last night at Dieters - 80 Bt but worth every Satang.
I also know that if I buy Steve's products the quality will not disappoint.
