I think I'll start a "What do you think about the election result?" thread next week.

I hope its a draw - that will give us more to talk about.

If the election is tied in the Electoral College, the House of Representatives gets to choose the President, and the Senate gets to choose the VP.  As things stand, that would be Romney for POTUS, Biden for VP.

When it come right down to it, only a few posters opinions really matter, those that can vote.

Wrong Keith, just because you are not eligible to vote does not mean you cannot have an opinion.

There is a world stage to consider as well as your own back-yard.

I did not say you cannot have a opinion.  You are entitled to whatever opinion you want on any subject.

But the facts are that the world's peoples can have whatever opinion they want, but only the US Voters opinion decides the USA's presidential election.

But if your opinion sways any US Voters, more power to you.

And only about 35% of the potential voters really have any say;  many states are a foregone conclusion.  The popular vote counts for nothing.

You are correct sir.  The election will be determined by a couple of swing states, Florida, Ohio, and Virginia will probably determine who will be the next President. Most all of the rest of the states are either solidly for one candidate or the other. I live in Hawaii which is Democrat controlled and will go for Obama. The electoral college is what determines who will win the Presidency.

One reason for the electorial college is that without it the main population centers would control the election outcome, so the cities (metropolitan areas) of LA and NY and other large cities could basically dictate to rural areas.

As an example, here is the county by county breakdown of who won the 2000 election where Bush got the electorial votes even though Gore won the populas:

If it went by the popular vote, it would actually be 'one man, one vote'.  This would never do!

Britain is the same in effect.  The drawing of constituency boundaries, quite apart from the fact that it is done by the party in power, almost inevitably gives one side an advantage.  Of course, now that we have three major parties, it gets even more complicated.

Maybe diluted to three MINOR parties ??
