Just booked tickets for myself and the Boss Lady.  Bangkok return Nok Air promo Baht 4,485  total cost for the 2 returns for first week in December flights.

I reckon that is bl**dy good value.

In fact flew with them last Friday baht 1,990.00 one way. Good flight, on time and about 2/3rds full so not bad for 1st week.

Long may it continue!

David you are lucky to live near the airport.........Its about an hour & a half away for me even though I live in Buriram,by then I'm already halfway to Bangkok. Why did they choose to build the Airport so far away from the actual City ?

Truthfully the airport is only about 25/30 KM away from Buriram, after all you will never get an airport located to close to a major city ie Heathrow,Milano,Torino, and many more.
But the worse one of all for me is Narita airport it's over 100KM to Toyko.

Buriram is hardly a major city & the airport was only built a few years ago not being one of the places an airfield was built to bomb Vietnam.Korat airport is yet another example,,far nearer to Korat City when they flew from the Airforce base on 304.

As Nookie says, Buriram is hardley a major city. I thought the Buriram airport origines were american airforce for Vietnam the same as most of the other airports which are located very close if not in the cities of Thailand.

It seems my post has been misunderstood.

I explained the Airport was not that far away from Buriram,i then used ie to describe the the major cities Airports,ie

Heathrow,Milano,Torino.

But i did not call Buriram a major city.

I apologize if my post come across as misleading or was misunderstood.

Buriram is in fact a fair size province according to 2010 figs, with a population of 1.553m it is larger than Udon Thani and only a tad smaller than Chiang Mai!

see wikipedia.org/wiki/Provinces_of_Thailand

As for Buriram airport it is definitely post Vietnam war and is where it is, according to local gossip, because the land was owned by some powerful individual with influence who stood to make a tidy sum from the sale of the land.  moneysmile

As previously mentioned all airports where possible are situated away from densely populated areas and 30kms from Buriram city center is by no means unreasonable. Bearing in mind I am only 10kms from it I think it is sensibly placed!  whistle

Buriram is hardly a major city

As Nookie says, Buriram is hardley a major city

Naff Orf the pair of you !

Buriram is a veritable Metrolpulis Motrepluis Mepotrulis - anyway it is a major city; look at the evidence :-

1 Railway Station
1 Airport
3 Hospitals
4 Taxis !!
Seems like hundreds of Samlors
8 Tuk Tuks
At least 10 Motorsai Taxis
1 University
1 Golf Course
1 Driving Range
8,567 Motorsai shops (at the last count)
1 Day Market
1 Night Market
2 Football Stadiums
1 Soapy Massage (or so I'm told)
1 Irish Bar
Speed & Daweng Dan, plus several other disco type places
several girlie bars (my mate tells me)
9,871 Karaokes
18,423,982 Som Tam or noodle or chicken stalls
Big C
Makro
148 Do it yourself mega stores

The list goes on - I rest my case.

Buriram is MEGA buriramsmiley

My understanding is that Buriram airport was always a civilian field.
I believe there were two fields specifically built for Vietnam operations.
Korat housed the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing which flew the famous "Operation Bolo" commanded by Robin Olds.
The other field was U Tapoa in Rayong which hosted the infamous "Arc Light" B52 bombing missions into Vietnam.
There may be others I am unaware of.
U Tapoa also was the South East Asian alternate strip for the space shuttle missions due to it's great length.
Cheers,
JT

Well had another return trip from Buriram to BKK booked at short notice.

Outward flight about 15 mins late and load factor 90%  Return on time and full.

The Saab 340 seats 34 pax (boing, brainfart 34 pax = 340 model?) is a nice aircraft and BFV plus Don Muaeng a pleasure to use.  Also a connecting bus service is due to start 1/10 to Suavarnabhumi (free)?

I have found that the earlier one can book the better the price, leave it late and you get shafted

Personally I feel that they have a good chance of making a bit of money on the route and once people know it is reliable they should be more keen to use it! Who knows they might even increase the frequency! thumbup
