Thai MP Boonsong Kowawisarat 'accidentally kills secretary'

Police in Thailand say that they will charge a member of the Thai parliament with causing death by negligence for accidentally shooting his secretary dead with a submachine gun.

They say that the accident happened in a restaurant on Sunday night.

Senator Boonsong Kowawisarat took out a 9mm Uzi submachine gun while waiting for food, the Bangkok Post reported.

He told police the gun accidentally discharged and his secretary was shot in the stomach.

Police say that the shooting happened in Phrae province, northern Thailand.

Police say that because Mr Boonsong was in shock after the incident, the restaurant owner rushed the secretary to hospital where she succumbed to gunshot wounds.

Correspondents say that it is not clear whether Mr Boonsong knew the gun was loaded before the shooting.

"From our initial inquiry, the secretary's family will not sue because they were relatives and it was an accident - he did not mean to do it," a local police officer told AFP by telephone.

Officials said it was also unclear why the senator was armed at the meal.

Police have yet to arrest the senator - a member of the upper house of the Thai parliament - as he is protected by parliamentary privilege, the Bangkok Post reported.

Mr Boonsong faces a maximum of 10 years imprisonment and a 20,000 baht ($636;£405) fine if convicted.

Thai polatitions are above Thai laws then! You would think Parliament would be holding their heads in shame but it would seem once again they have no clue, care or consideration to behave in a civilised and just manner to their own people let alone world opinion.  This is progress in reverse.

Wow,

Nothing like this would every happen in America:

The Chappaquiddick incident is the circumstances involving the death of Mary Jo Kopechne, whose body was discovered underwater inside an automobile belonging to her driver, U.S. Senator Edward M. "Ted" Kennedy. During the early morning hours of July 19, 1969, Kopechne's body and the car were found in a tidal channel on Chappaquiddick Island, Massachusetts. After the discovery, Kennedy gave a statement to police saying that during the previous night, Kopechne was his passenger when he took a wrong turn and accidentally drove his car off a bridge and into the water. After pleading guilty to a charge of leaving the scene of an accident after causing injury, Kennedy received a suspended sentence for two months in jail. The incident became a national scandal, and may have influenced Kennedy's decision not to campaign for President of the United States in 1972 and 1976.

Yes Thai politicians are above Thai law 100% and have been for many year's.

You don't see people with money going to prison here,it's not for us to judge what's right or wrong, just accept it and move on.

The only people that end up incarcerated here are the poor, and as we all know nobody really cares about then anyway.

Not saying it's right, not saying it's wrong, just saying that's the way it is.

The land of smiles can be devastating for some.

Hi

Just googled parliamentary privilege for Thai politicians ~~~~~~~~

Members of the National Assembly enjoy parliamentary privilege which were enshrined in the constitution, these include: the "words expressed in giving statements of fact or opinions or in casting the vote" in a joint sitting of the National Assembly, No member of the House of Representatives or Senator shall, during a session, be arrested, detained or summoned by a warrant for an inquiry as the suspect in a criminal case unless permission of the House of which he or she is a member is obtained or he or she is arrested in flagrante delicto.

Nowhere does it say that wannbe hoodlums who have watched to many Thai soaps should not be arrested on the spot for at least manslaughter.

This was not a libelous act which the law is designed to protect against but if anything an act of stupidity by someone who should have known better and IMHO he should suffer the consequences.

Surely "during a session" means just that and not protection for a restaurant meal break and if this is not a case of being caught "In Flagrante delicto" then the pope is not a catholic.

However TIT and time will tell if the pope is about to convert to Islam!
