hey Allen,

The kiau Maragot is not the same as the mekong giant catfish, they are in the same family tree and at first glance they may look a bit alike but the way they feed and grow is different, the mekong eats plankton, and verry small insects.
The Kiau was actually breed for consumption, the father was a Tepo ( carnivorous catfish can grow to 200kg) and his mother a pangasius ( herbivour). The CP company made this hybrid to export to Europe, but it was a failure and so they sold all the fish to local markets, PP fishing park is actually the only fishing park that has this fish.
And it is no longer available since the project has stopped.
The funny thing is, when they are small they eat bread like there ""mother"" but then after a while no1 could catch em anymore, then i started fishing with a small livebait tilapia, and all of a sudden we find out it switched to a predator fish when they are above 1.5kg's like there ""Father"".

I will add a picture of a mekong giant i caught yesterday and if u compare the pictures u shall see the head of the mekong is mutch larger, and the color is more yellowish.

I will also add a picture of a pacu i caught the day before, a family of the piranha, and a fun fish to catch, just dont put your finger in its mouth or its gone  oldmanwithstick

The biggest fish is around 17-20kg's and its an Arapaima a beautyfull amazone killer.

Hope that clarifies it for you, if you have any more questions please feel free to ask.

Thanks thats great , the fish you talk about they do have them in the Mekong and they grow up to 400 KG ,1 bait locals use to catch these fish with is Dog pieces of chopped up road kill 500 gram chunks  , the boat driver on our trip to Laos told us this .
He said it looks like a giant Mekong in some ways .

pangasius , is sold in Macro and they some times call it Dory (Farmed in Laos for export ) , a lot of farang restaurants sell it (Fish and chips) it is ok but I can taste its a fresh water fish ! slight taste of mud .
Hey I will come over to do some fishing , we sometimes fish in Surin Fishing park my son 9 years old has a Pla- Buak 21 kg ,he sat on my knee so I helped him it took about 30 mins to land I was done in mate my hands were dropping off - great fun .

Hey allen,

That fish would be the Tepo or Tepa, they can grow to verry big sizes and are thai original, they do look more like a mekong then a kiau, only the longer fins and for the tepo the black dot on his side is a clear give away, and they are both in the pond aswell, the Kiau however is not found in the wild, it could be that some fishfarmers trew them in tho, but since they have been ""created"" only a few years back, no1 knows there full weight.

Yeah u can buy pangasius in europe aswell ive read some articles about how restaurants in europe sell it as cod or other more expensive whitefish.

I the best way to tell if its pangasius is like u said a bit of a ground flavour, and also the fish even when cooked never becomes ""white"" like cod, it always stays a bit ""glassy"" i gues is the best way to describe it.

Thats awsome, 21kg's the mekong is 1 of my favorite catfish the sheer power of them is amazing, and the rate they grow is even more impressive, in about a year the first 40kg specimens will be caught in PP fishingpark, can't wait for that!

I go fishing in bungsamlan every now and then, biggest 1 ive caught there was around 60kg, and after that fight i was rdy for the hospital :D

would be fun allen im sure u will have a good time.

As for teeth almost all catfish have somesort of teeth, the Kiau has the same kind of teeth that the tepa and tepo have, its like the wels catfish, they eat there pray whole, and have teeth for gripping, its like thousands of verry small needles.

And yes garamet and pacu are the same fish, only pacu is what they are called in the amazon, where they come from, great eating fish by the way.

Thanks,

The fishing park is on 2074 rd. on the way to Kumuang - Putthaisong road right next to the Electricity company when u have the electricity company on your left side, u turn in right after it onto a gravel road, u will see a blue banner with fish on it.

I dont know exactly how to drive from Surin, im not as good with roads as i am with fish
