UPDATE:
On first 6 days of #Songkran, there were 282 deaths & 3,059 injuries in 2,872 accidents /via @191Thailand

The six day period of the Songkran holidays reported 282 deaths and 3,059 injuries caused by road accidents.

Nakhon Si Thammarat and Surat Thani provinces had the highest road accidents with ten casualties each. Drunk driving remains the leading cause of death.


A total of 282 people were killed and 3,059 others injured in 2,872 road accidents during the six day period of the 'seven dangerous days' of the Songkran holiday, the Road Safety Directing Center reported. There were 447 accidents on April 15 alone, claiming 43 lives, and causing 463 injuries.

Drunk driving remains the leading cause of road accidents, accounting for 42.28 percent of the total. About 21.7 percent of road accidents was caused by speeding. Most accidents, approximately 83 percent, involved motorcycles. Accidents involving pick-up trucks account for about 12 percent.

The most deaths over the six-day period were reported in Nakhon Si Thammrat and Surat Thani provinces, at ten deaths each.

Chiang Rai had the most accidents, at 106. Nong Bua Lamphu was the only province without road accidents during the period, while there were twelve provinces without road fatalities.

there are two ways you could look at this situation one is great loads of dick heads been taken of the roads now. and two we can feel sorry for the Innocent Thais or fallangs who obey the law and still get wiped out by a piss head. i think in the not to distant future songkran will be a alcohol free event with strict law enforcements applying. we had a party this year on 13/14/15 on the 14th there were about 300 people there and i was talking to 5 police men and there wife's and they all were driving and drinking whiskey makes you think a guys happy songkran

A total of 320 people were killed in 3,129 road accidents over the “seven dangerous days” of the Songkran holiday, from April 11 to 17, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department reported on Wednesday.

The fatalities were up from 271 last year by 49.

A total of 3,320 people were reported injured in road accidents during the seven days, a drop from the 3,476 injured reported last year,

The department on Tuesday reported the six-day road toll at 282.

UK has below 2000 traffic fatalities in a year, about the same population as Thailand, so you would expect 40 deaths a week in a normal week, but even if you double that for a bad week you don't get anywhere near 282.
