This is a wicked loss of life....bloody appalling!!
I shudder to think of the kinds of injuries sustained by those who weren't killed outright.
No wonder most of the farlang I know stay indoors for Songkran.

Road Safety Center urged 17 provinces to be on high alert against Songkran road accidents and fatalities
BANGKOK, 14 April 2012 (NNT) – Thailand's road safety center has called on dozens of provinces to be extra-alert on the rise in road accidents during the Songkran holidays.

The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department's Director-General ViboonViboon Sanguanpong, also the Deputy Chairman of the Road Safety Directing Center, said that statistics collected during the past 6 years showed 17 provinces have seen more than 40 deaths during a single annual festival period.period.

These provinces are Roi Et, Chanthaburi, Suphan Buri, Surat Thani, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Chonburi, Saraburi, Ayutthaya, Phetchabun, Lopburi, Bangkok, Chiang Rai, Nakhon Sawan, Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima and Phitsanulok.

Mr. Viboon added that the total road fatalities in these provinces are approximately 45.45 percent of the total deaths seen throughout the country during the same period.

He said that the main causes of the deaths included drunk driving, speeding and the absence of head helmets among motorbike riders.

Therefore, officials in all of these provinces have been urged to work integratively with related agencies to cut down road accidents through stricter legal enforcement and social approaches, in order to save as many lives as possible, particularly during the week-long Songkran festival celebrations.

I've just checked the Bangkok Post website, which gives a total of 114 deaths over the first three days.  Compare that with the daily total, year-long, of 34 a day (post on TV).  If BP is right, that's pretty good.

Yes, I know any deaths are a sad waste of life, but only 12 more for three days of 'sanook, sanook' is pretty good by Thai standards.

210 for four days is pretty grim.  Last year it was 271 (or 279, I don't remember which) for the whole seven days.

BTW, 144 was right yesterday;  Bangkok Post got it wrong.

A total of 253 people were killed and 2,751 others injured in 2,134 road accidents from April 11 to 15, the first five of the "seven dangerous days" of the Songkran holiday period, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department reported on Monday.

Nakhon Si Thammarat and Surat Thani had the most fatalities, 10 each, followed by Pichit (9).

On Sunday, 43 people were killed, with drunk driving the largest single cause. Death and serious injuries related to drink driving increased from 17.14 per cent over the same period  last year to 26.19 per cent this year,  according to the department.

There were still 12 provinces that held to the governmen's targeted “zero rate” of traffic fatalities --  Kampangpetch, Satun, Yala, Ranong, Nakhon Phanom, Lop Buri, Trang, Trat, Nong Bua Lamphu, Pattani, Sing Buri and Chonburi.

Any province that achieves the government’s target over Songkran will awarded a trophy and cash prize by the Statesman General Prem Tinasulanonda Foundation.

The department reported the road toll for the first four days of the Songkran festival at 210 yesterday
