Buriram Govt Urged to Solve Pollution Problem

Buriram residents held a protest, urging their provincial governor to solve the pollution problem caused by a waste landfill site.

Local leaders and representatives from the Hin Klon, Nong Ku, and Khoklam subdistricts in Buriram's Lamplaimat District held a mass gathering in front of the province's city hall to submit a letter to the provincial governor.

Residents urged the governor to expedite the closure of a waste landfill site.

The landfill site, managed by Lamplaimat municipality, is in Ban Nong Ngew of Hin Klon subdistrict. Residents complained that the landfill has caused severe pollution.

Earlier, people blocked the road in protest, obstructing garbage trucks from pouring wastes. They called on related agencies to remove all sewage from the area.

However, representatives of the municipality, the subdistrict administration organization, and the district have not responded to protesters' request for more than nine days.

Residents complained that the air pollution levels are unbearable, and moreover, that polluted water is seeping into paddy fields and causing serious damage to rice yields. Moreover, the residents will notify the police today, as they claim the mayor and subdistrict administration chief are ignoring their duties.

A village headman, Boonmee Thavorn, said they aim to inform the provincial governor regarding the matter, and call on him to quickly solve the problem. He added that residents have been enduring the problem for over 20 years.

Boonmee threatened to step up the movement if no progress is made. In response, Buriram Assistant District Officer Chalermpon Pollawan received a letter on behalf of the governor. He pledged to inspect the area as soon as possible and to call related agencies to work on the matter.
