Head of Village asking questions?

The so called Head of Village has asked my wife for my personal details passport number,date of birth and so on for goverment information,i have never experienced anything like this in 10 years of visiting Buri Ram and am currently withholding them.
I am at the moment only using a single entry tourist visa to reside here has anyone had to give their details over in similar situations?

If you really want to be 'legal', you have to report to the local police station within 24 hours of your stay. I know it is rather a pain in the royal ... , but if you are on a holiday trip, the organisers will do it for you.
If you are on your own, you should legally ... but untill now there have been no real problems with it.

Didnt know this. Not that its ever been a problem and have never been ask by anyone in the village (and its a small village) but interesting info none the less.

It should be possible for your wife to check with the Amphur Office under what authority these requests are made.  This is not the first time I've heard of it... but it's never happened to me!

Thanks for the replies,when i got my thai driving license the police took all my details including fingerprints and the local goverment office also has them from when my daughter was born and i am even registered at the address with the British embassy just can't understand his need for them and has even gone as far to say to my wife he will report me if i don't hand them over!

It must be some brandnew bureaucrat who has misinterpreted some government regulations and who tries to make himself important in the eyes of your thai family ... just oblige him and humour him, make him feel he is a big and important man and in the future he will be your pawn.
By law every alien has to report the his nearest policestation within 24 hours after arrival.
This law is not only law in Thailand, I think that 99%, if not 100%, of the countries in the world apply the same law, even in your own country, but as we are no 'alien' in our country it doesn't apply. Every tourist in your country is normally reported by the touroperator or the hotel where you have to fill in a registrationform what is passed over to the local police the very same day.

Had a visit day 2 days ago from Satuk local gov't office who wanted my passport number, DOB seemed to have all the other details already.

With all the idiots running around blowing roofs and legs off who can blame Thai govt for wanting to know a few details. No problem if you are legit!

Are you suggesting i give him my details because this is'nt the local satuk goverment office it's just some local farmer who got voted head of the village and now spends his days drinking rice whisky and thinking he runs Thailand.You should probably take abit more care with this sort of thing yourself if you carry on handing out your details to anyone who asks for them you'll soon find yourself in trouble.

I also got asked and gave them my info.. village only has about 100 ppl in it but im legal here so no worries ... All i got asked for was name, age and country i was from

Im sure everyone is legal on here and will give there details when asked buy the correct person not some farmer in a suit with badges stuck on the sleeves that look important.

The way it works in a village is that a normal man or woman does things like this... You dont see government officials turning up and doing it... So the head of the village is the correct guy to do this.. Dont see a problem if im honest..

The village headman may be a rice whisky drinking  local farmer, elevated to his high ranking position as a result of buying the village votes, but he is still employed by the local amphur, and some of his duties (other than drinking and farming) when he has time are on their behalf.

I have twice over the past 10 years had to provide the personal info to a local policeman, who assures me that his bosses in town require it.  Probably a re-visit is due soon, as I think the last time was 4/5 years ago....and I do have a new passport.

Sounds to me like a man doing his job. Thai people have to be checked too you know.

The last time this happened to me they asked for name, age, nationality and passport number. The asked my wife the same except she gave ID card number.

We dont have ID cards so hence asking for passport number. Its all part of the system to keep tabs with the population.

Really dont understand the problem.

As Prakonchai Nick said the village headman is all part of the system.
