I always go from Prakhonchai via Nang Rong, Non Din Dang, Wattana Nakhon,, then the 359, 304 and 331

Can do comfortably in 4.5 hours (5+ hours from Surin) but add on toilet stops, food stops, somtam etc etc!!!

The 304 over the mountains between Paktongchai and Kabinburi is much improved in recent years, but there is still a single lane section in the middle where invariably you will find yourself behind slow moving trucks.

Avoiding this area and not using the 24 is far more pleasant and takes much the same time.

I would take the same route as Nookie if I lived where he lived.

I don't, I live near Nick  -  so I take the same route as Nick.

The only recent change for me has been to take the Laem Chabang exit to the no7 motorway. It is a shite road - more like a roller coaster - but it brings you straight on to the Sukhumvit Road in Pattaya near soi Siam Country Club.
