Bangkok Post: Newspaper section: News

Are you sitting comfortably? Then don't be shy to tell the world about the traditional Thai posture known as pubpeab.

A Facebook campaign is promoting the pose, which involves sitting in a kneeling position. More than 65,000 people have registered that they "like" the www.facebook.com/pubpeab page since it was launched on Friday.

Pubpeab is a traditional way of sitting mostly used in formal settings or to pay respect to elders, monks or Buddha images. The campaign slogan posted on the page is: "Have you pubpeabed today? It's not dangerous, it's Thai beauty. Your superiors will love you!"

The group encourages Thais to photograph themselves sitting in the pubpeab pose and to post the picture on the social networking website.

Hundreds of photos featuring people in the pose in various locations have been posted on the page.

For example, Pattani's basketball team pubpeab in the middle of a basketball court, an office worker pubpeabs in front of his desk, and two men pubpeab at a skytrain station.

Ladda Tangsupachai, director of the Cultural Surveillance Department, hailed the page, saying the campaign would encourage young Thais to learn more about the traditional sitting position. However, she said people should consider appropriate timing for their pubpeab so that it does not create danger or inconvenience.
