Talking about Thai funeral in the village, usually the village have system of their own each person die all houses in the village will get envelope to pay to support the funeral expenses and its like a circle, of course many times its not enough to complete ceremony the way the family want it to be but that's a different thing.
Usually a funeral in the village is a very modest ceremony.

If the funerals in my village are modest, I dread to think what a lavish one would cost. It's the never ending food and drink that cost the money - largely for the village scroungers - who contribute as little as possible. What annoys me is that many women take home bags of food, + bottles EVERY MEALTIME - for the entire duration, and some donate as little as  20/30bt!

If, as Nick suggests, there is an element of 'show' these 100 Baht collections won't nearly cover the cost.

When my partner's son died 4 years ago it was not an elaborate 4/5 affair but she did want a nice stupa and coffin.

The cost was in excess of 75,000 Baht and there was a 35,000 Baht shortfall.

I covered the shortfall in lieu of sin sod.

That is the correct way.

YOU decide when to help and for what. Not them!

Yes of course,we all do , but Thais do seem to spend money on funerals that they don't have.Only this year one family in the Village spent thousands on the year after party ( you know the all night movies and what have you ) and then come and try and borrow money off you to pay for it

Sadly the Thais appear to spend more money on the dead than they do the living. If they cared more for themselves, their families, and their homes, instead of the dead, the monks, the wats, the lottery and all the black magic nonsense they believe in, they would have a far higher standard of living, and Thailand  itself would have a higher standing in the world.
