Bangkok Post: Online news: Easier Stuff The first season of Thailand's Got Talent ended on Sunday with 13-year-old Maneepatsorn Myra Molloy singing her way the grand prize. Remember that name. You are going to hear it a lot in the future.Thailand’s top talentFew people can disagree that Thai fans across the country chose the most talented individual performer as the winner of the first season of the Thailand's Got Talent contest.
She is 13-year-old Maneepatsorn ‘‘Myra’’ Molloy, a half-Thai-half American singer with a voice that had handle opera and Broadway classics with ease. She did a little of both in the final and walked away with the grand prize – five million baht in cash, a car and a luxury condo.
Myra is a big fan of musicals like Phantom of the Opera and Mulan and her big ambition is to become a Broadway performer one day, a very definite possibility. In addition to her vocal abilities, she can also play the piano, violin, viola, guitar and ukulele.
Somtow Sucharitkul, artistic director of the Bangkok Opera, was especially excited to hear of Myra's success, since he has seen her develop and blossom as an artist over the past few years.
"Myra joined us in 2006 as a member of the Ayodhya Children's Group," he said, "and has been quite active as a participant in many productions. She has recently been working with Bruce Gaston on the opera A Boy and a Tiger, in which she has a big role. We've seen her grow as an artist and for some time now I've been planning to create a special part for her in an opera."
It is fun to imagine what lies ahead for young Myra. One viewer of the youtube video of her contest-winning performance wrote this:
“I have worked in opera for almost 30 years and have never seen talent equal to this girl. The clarity of her voice is breathtaking and her musicianship is remarkable. Thailand should be proud to have such an outstanding talent to show the world. She is destined to become one of the greatest performers of all times!!!”
