Why we pay more
« on: May 23, 2011, 12:16:23 PM »
It would be nice to get the views of people how it is justified that we pay more or is it ok to be over charged as we are guests in the Land of Smiles

I bought motorcycle insurance in Pattaya some years ago from Liberty Insurance. The price then was 208bt. The woman prepared all the paperwork whilst I waited, and when she handed over the completed item asked for 400bt. I queried this, whereupon her answer was. "Yes it is 208bt -for Thais. but 400bt for farangs!".

Needless to say not only did I tell her what she could do with her insurance, but immediately wrote to Liberty HO. Of course no response!

This sounds like a great place and good service but back to the point of why we pay more not all the time but it will happen. Those who have kids here i mean half thai farang and the child u have to prepare them for the worst just like the zoo incident and i u dont u may have some explaining to do when they are older.

Whenever you go somewhere, go prepared.

I am a Thai resident and take my residency and alien registration books with me when I go to zoos, national parks etc.. On hand too are copies of my kids birth certificates.. Never needed them though despite my son looking nothing like a Thai.

Never had a problem

When the children are 15, they will have their own ID cards.

With regard to tyres, batteries etc, it is necessary to shop around first. My last battery I bought for 1800bt, whereas Bridgestone ACT wanted over 2000bt.

Glad to here of your success but i afraid that may not be the case everytime,if u think that us aliens have the same rights and prices as locals im sorry to burst your bubble but that is incorrect,it wont happen everytime but a some point it will.

This website is expats helping expats ok and every person has been leaving in the Land of Smiles for a number of years so its best to be realistic and honest, just because some of us have been here a while like myself dont kid yourself or think u are getting the same deal as locals.

It rather depends on what it is you are buying and perhaps more importantly where.

In local markets I do better than my wife, as she and like most Thais do not bargain as hard as us farangs.

If you've been here for a number of years, as you say,  you soon learn the correct price of things, and ensure that when you buy that is what you pay.

If you are paying more then you are doing something wrong.

Do you think Thais do not pay over the odds? I can assure you that they do -often.

Book a hotel online - some will charge Thais more than foreigners.

Pattaya baht buses charge obvious Thai tourists (ie those form Bangkok) more than the local Thais

Some Thai traders will rip anyone off if they think they can get away with it.

When I am forced to vote with my feet I normally voice my discontent to anyone in earshot!
