I am considering moving to Surin and marrying a young lady who lives alone in her own house outside the city of Surin.  I have been in contact with her via internet since last November and stayed with her for 10 days in January. She seems like a nice girl, 36 years old with a job as an accounting clerk.  Now, she wants to be engaged and suggests I consider buying engagement and wedding rings for $700.00  She has sent me pictures of the rings from the catalogue she is looking at.  I plan to visit Thailand to see her in December of this year and she wants me to buy the rings at that time.  Could someone please share their opinions and experiences on my situation and on the ring thing in Issan?  Thanking you in advance for your assistance.  Regards,  Ed in USA   sawadi

Hi Ed,

Welcome to the forum.  welcome1

What do you mean she ASKED you engagement ring?
Will you marry her in the near future? Do you have any plans to marry her? If the answer is yes so when do you think you will do it? I think this is the first question you should ask yourself before asking us and than know if you WANT to buy her engagement ring (your future wife).

Please give us more details and tell us about yourself.
There are many expats here that can help and advice about your situation because most of us 'been there'.

We are looking forwards to hearing from you. sawadi

Ed,Dont try running before you can walk......I would suggest really getting to know this girl before going down that road otherwise I fear you will end up with a very depleted bank account...
How many times have you visited Thailand?

The question is ''are you getting engaged and married'', beceause if not, buying rings seems a bit silly to me. You just have seen her once for ten days? Maybe it's better to wait and meet eachother a few more times before making big decisions.

Hi Ed
There is 3 rings in Thailand's normal etiquette ,1st is the  Engagement-ring ,2nd is the Wedding and 3rd is the Suffering  spot1

Sorry...the old ones are the old ones  ;)
