Thailand among top malware countries
China, Thailand and Taiwan top list of malware victimsBy The Nation
Published on April 11, 2011China, Thailand and Taiwan are the countries most affected by malware, with nearly 70 per cent of computers riddled by the destructive software in those countries, according to a report from PandaLabs.
PandaLabs, Panda Security's anti-malware laboratory, has published its quarterly report for the first three months of this year, analysing IT security events from January to March.
Highlights of the report include an increase in virus activity over the previous quarter; threats propagated through Android and Facebook; and activities by the Anonymous "hacktivist" group.
So far this year, there has been a surge in the number of IT threats in circulation. In the first three months, there was a daily average of 73,190 new samples of malware, the majority of which were trojans. New threats in the first months of the year were up 26 per cent year-on-year, and up 16 per cent on the fourth quarter of last year.
Once again, trojans accounted for most of the new threats, comprising 70 per cent of all new malware. These programs are favoured by organised criminals trying to steal bank details so they can commit fraud or steal directly from victims' accounts.
In the ranking of the top 20 countries for infections, which was drawn from data generated by Panda ActiveScan, China, Thailand and Taiwan continue to occupy the first three places, with infection rates of nearly 70 per cent.
