Police hunt man after mother killed

Baby choked in attack but manages to survive

NAKHON RATCHASIMA : Police are hunting a 24-year-old suspect following the murder of a mother and attack on her baby daughter on Sunday.

Police believe the murder victim, who was beaten to death with a stick, may also have been raped.

The 11-month-old baby was choked unconscious with a pillow but later resuscitated, although she remains in critical condition.

An arrest warrant was issued yesterday by Nakhon Ratchasima Provincial Court for Pornsawan Suriwong, or Khai, who is a friend of the woman's husband.

Police were called to the family's home in Muang district at 3pm on Sunday and when they arrived at the crime scene, they found the mother lying semi-naked on a mat near her unconscious baby, said Pol Capt Suphachet Nawachindaphong, an officer at Chor Hor police station in Muang district.

A 60-centimetre-long bloodstained stick was found nearby and the room in which the attack took place was in a state of disarray, with various objects strewn across the floor.

The baby later was resuscitated and rushed to Maharat Nakhonratchasima Hospital along with her mother and put in intensive care.

The mother died in hospital at about 11pm that night.

Preliminary police investigations suggested the mother had fought against a rape attempt, prompting her attacker to hit her repeatedly with the stick.

Investigators believe the attacker then pressed a pillow against the mouth of the baby to stop it crying and then ransacked the house for valuables, said Pol Capt Suphachet, adding that a mobile phone and some gold necklaces had been stolen.

Nakhon Ratchasima police chief Pol Maj Gen Chatkanok Khiewsongsaeng said the suspect, Mr Pornsawan, had been jailed for drug offences recently at Nakhon Ratchasima central prison, where he had befriended the woman's husband.

Pol Lt Col Ronarong Surathos, a deputy chief at Chor Hor police station said charges of murder, theft and molestation would likely be laid.

The woman had told witnesses before she lost consciousness that the attacker was Mr Pornsawan, police said.

The witness reports matched another account by a separate witness who said Mr Pornsawan was seen in the woman's house around the time of the attack, police said

Murder, rape suspect killed by police

A 24-year-old man accused of raping and killing a mother and seriously injuring her 11-month-old baby girl in Nakhon Ratchasima on Sunday was shot dead by police on Tuesday morning, police said.

Pornsawan Suriwong was arrested late on Monday night by Chor Hor police at a housing estate of the National Housing Authority in Muang district of Nakhon Ratchasima .

Pornsawan was taken to Chor Hor police station where he was interrogated throughout the night, police said.

He confessed to raping the 23-year-old woman and hitting her and her baby girl with a wooden stick on Sunday.  The woman died in hospital later on Sunday night.

On Tuesday morning, five police from Chor Hor police station took Pornsawan to a railway crossing at Kradon village in tambon Ban Pho of Nakhon Ratchasima's Muang district to look for a mobile phone which the suspect said he took from the woman, police said.

The suspect said he left the stolen phone under the bridge near the railway crossing.

While the police were looking for the mobile phone, Pornsawan snatched a .38 pistol from the waist holster  of Pol Sgt-Maj Prachuap Chokchorhor and opened fire at the police, according to police.

In the subsequent exchyange of shots, Pornsawan was hit once in the forehead and twice in the chest and died on the spot, police said.

No policemen were not hurt.  One of the shots from the suspect hit a police vehicle, leaving a hole on it.

Police said the 11-month-old baby girl was now out of danger, but still under doctors' care.

Short of executing him, a fitting result.

Shows the total incompetence of the police. One would have expected him to be handcuffed behind his back and guarded.

No spelling mistake. I would have preferred to see him legally executed - indeed in such a way as I mentioned in an earlier thread which was deleted by Admin.

As Admin says "Case closed"  The Police have outlined their version of events - who are we to query it!
