Bangkok airport ready for Songkran 6 Apr 2011 Suvarnabhumi Airport prepared to handle Songkran travelers BANGKOK, 6 April 2011 (NNT)-The preparation for Suvarnabhumi Airport is now underway to accommodate a massive number of both domestic and international passengers expected to travel by plane during Songkran Festival.Airport Spokesperson Ms. Wilaiwan Nutwilai said from 9-18 April, 2011, over 1.5 million passengers will be traveling through the airport. The number has been estimated to be about 150,000 people on a daily basis. The ratio between domestic and foreign passengers would be 20:80. The majority of foreign visitors are forecast to come from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
In and outbound flights are expected to increase to 35.5% compared to the same period last year, accounting for 8,555 trips. 622 more chartered and commercial flights will be added to the usual fleet of planes at the airport. I.D. verification will be strictly enforced on both Thais and foreigners.
The number of staff as well as safety around the airport will be increased. In addition, security officers will be patrolling on the premises 24 hours. Passengers are urged to arrive at the airport much longer before boarding time to avoid the crowd.
