BANGKOK, 27 March 2011 (NNT)-Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said he wished for a transparent election campaign, saying vote-buying would undermine people’s rights to vote, adding that Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra would be able to return to politics as long as he abided by the law.
Following a phone-in by Mr. Thaksin encouraging red shirt protesters to vote for his party in the upcoming polls, Mr. Abhisit said if Mr. Thaksin wished for a return, it would be possible under the laws. The Prime Minister added that he would consult with the Election Commission of Thailand in a bid to promote transparency in the election campaign.
Mr. Abhisit also pleaded with everyone not to spread political rumors through the survey, claiming that the election result would speak for itself. He said later that this was a perfect time to hold an election for the Thai people to decide their own future and to drive the country forward.
