I had  Olive-backed Sun-bird's nesting in a bush by steps to my veranda ,they used to nip in and out so quickly it to me ages to figure out what they were as I'm no expert like isanbirder  .........but do like to do a bit of bird watching whilst fishing 

Sakut Buddha and CC tell me that a chair in a bar on Walking Street is an excellent location to view the whole plethora of Thai birds

I wondered when this thread would start degenerating

Sorry, Nick.  You would have to be a birdwatcher to know how irritating that very stale joke reiterated ad nauseam can become (by the way, it dates back 700 years);  sometimes the irritation shows.  I had hoped, as always on this kind of thread, that other people would put in queries... and indeed, I too wanted to find out what Nookie's little maroon birds were.

Nookie, is there any chance of a photo?  I can't think of any birds that colour.  The long beak suggests a sunbird of that kind, and I wondered about Brown-throated.  Many sunbirds have metallic colours which look different in different  lights.

It doesn't look a bit like a Bustard, Al;  where did you find it?  You might find an 'aasvogel' if you try (Afrikaans for vulture).

ib NOT A CHANCE OF GETTING A PHOTO,,,THEY ARE NOT AROUND EVERY DAY,sorry for caps,but the colouring is like a metallic maroon colour same features as the birds Nick has but a diff colour

Arrived a bit late on the scene but it could be that your jobs are in fact Purple throated Sunbirds ~~~ whilst the do have purple throats the predominate colour is a dull red/maroon on the breast.

Still hoping to spot the exact colour of my bird -it disappears so quickly. In the meantime apologies to Isanbirder for the irritation caused. I am grateful to him and others for their input.

I think you will find its  The Barred Buttonquail or Common Bustard-Quail (Turnix suscitator)  so its more of a Quail than a Little bustard,
I under stand what you mean about the Aasvogel though Mike    maybe more of a pigeon though

I was using a different book, from which Purple-throated Sunbird has completely disappeared!  It has now become Van Hasselt's Sunbird (informative, that), and has changed its scientific name as well.  It seems to be a bit out of range, but anything is possible!
