Should men dye their hair?
« on: March 13, 2011, 11:08:38 AM »
Something you all must have noticed is that in Thailand it is very rare to see any Thai MEN with grey/white hair.

Do you think it look good to see an old man with dyed hair instead of the natural grey hair?

Is it look natural? confused4

Do YOU dye your hair?

Cool or Not? scatter

Yes it does seem a common practice for middle-aged men in Thailand to dye their hair ,even amoungest the poor farming community.Dye I believe can be bought for 20 Baht a bottle .
I would never dye my hair ,I'm ugly enough without something else for people to use's as a target for micky taking .I remember a guy years ago I work with and he dyed his hair,he got loads of stick, hence the nick-name "Boot Polish Bob"  ::). As I am going a tad grey ( at the tender age of 51 :( ) at the sides I do keep my hair a lot shorter these days which seems to hide the grey.
Any Western man  who dye's his hair is un-cool in my book but looks OK on the Thais  :)

They often use a herbal dye extracted from a creeping plant with deep blue flowers (I don't know what it's called).  This is for black hair.

Personally, I think auburn or blonde hair on Thais looks awful;  it doesn't suit their skin.  In addition, the blonde dyes actually harm the hair.

I had a disaster in Pattaya (I have had a couple actually!  whistle)

The wife's sister had a hair salon and offered to cut my hair. I made my usual joke by saying "can you just cut out the grey ones". She said, "Don't worry about the grey ones Ray, we can colour them".

I thought 'in for a Penny, in for Pound' let's have a crack at having a lighter shade.

Long story short -it came out a gingery colour and that night we were out in Pattaya on a stage night. I was a bit conscious of the colour and my embarrassment was complete when one of the 'lads' said "Bloody hell Ray, you like a Ford Anglia with new tyres".

Frankly, I didn't see any humour in the comment but the other 12 guys did !  wildman

I agree with the above and would also add

#4 grow a pony-tail
#5 wear a baseball cap. This doesn't make you look youthful, it looks like your hiding a BALD HEADoldmanwithstick

#4 Pony Tail: I think it's OK if the rest of the hair on your head is intact - nothing more silly than bald men with pony tails and people with starter pony tails i.e.elastic bands round one inch of hair.....LOL

The main problem with hair dying is that when apply it is also dying the scalp, for us, men with short hair, it look many times just not real because of the scalp color and not the hair color!
maybe the question should be HOW TO DYE YOUR HAIR WITHOUT DYING YOUR SCALP? punk

I was on a plane once when a passenger came on with his hair green.  Bad enough, but carved into the green hair was the sign for a female toilet (spread skirts!).
