Border governors ordered to set up war rooms

SURIN, 8 February 2011 (NNT) – Interior Minister Chavarat Chanvirakul has instructed governors of provinces on the Thai-Cambodian border to set up war rooms to monitor the border situation and hand out assistance to villagers affected by cross-border shellings.

Mr Chavarat on Tuesday chaired a meeting with the governors of Surin, Buri Ram and Sa Kaeo as well as officials from related units in Surin province. He reiterated to the governors of those border provinces to stay alert and set up war rooms to give assistances, both at the provincial and district levels.

The minister also assigned the provincial governors to closely coordinate with the military, monitor news reports provided by coordinators at the community level, warn local residents upon possible spilling-over of clashes, and be prepared for evacuation.

Mr Chavarat ordered all provinces located near the border to establish a self-defense system, with supports from other districts and nearby provinces. He also asked the officials to speedily raise understanding with villagers, take evacuation drills and boost their morale.

The minister later visited local residents gathering at Kap Choeng Witthaya School and gave them survival kits plus his own donation of 100,000 THB through Kap Choeng district office. He also conversed with villagers, telling them to bear with the situation and wait for upcoming peace.

Interior Minister Visits Evacuees in Surin Province
UPDATE : 9 February 2011

The interior minister visited Surin province to follow up on the situation at the Thai-Cambodian border and to visit those who have fled their homes to escape the fighting.

Interior Minister Chavarat Charnvirakul presided over a meeting attended by Permanent-Secretary of Interior, Wichian Chavalit; Director-General of the Department of Provincial Administration, Mongkol Surasajja; and the governors of Sisaket, Surin, and Sa Kaeo provinces to discuss the effects of the recent clashes between the Thai and Cambodian military forces, which have began on last Friday and ended on Monday.

The interior minister asked the governors to provide assistance to the people affected by the clashes and to prepare shelters in case heavy fighting erupts again.

Each of the bordered districts has been put on full alert.

The interior minister also visited evacuees who are being sheltered at a local school.

Meanwhile, the Chong Jom-O'Smach Border crossing at Surin province has been re-opened, as the situation has improved.

However, the area has been relatively quiet since reopening.

At the same time, near the Temple of Tha Muang Thom and the Temple of Ta Kwai in Surin province, cross-border tension has been decreasing as Thai and Cambodian soldiers are now communicating with each other.

In Buriram province, the local authority has explained to the people of the village located closest to the Thai-Cambodian border that there is no fighting in the area.

However, the villagers are still afraid to go out at night.
