How to pay for a new British passport
« on: January 21, 2011, 06:57:56 PM »
This was on another thread, but I can't find it, so I'm starting a new one.  If you don't have a credit card, someone said you could use a debit card (must be VISA) issued by a Thai bank.  I tried this, but it failed, because my Krung Thai card was a 'swipe through' type (I thought all ATM-friendly cards were that?)

The next stage is to get an International Banker's Draft.  You cannot get this in Buriram;  I tried Siam Commercial and Bangkok Banks, and both said 'Korat".  I got a friend to buy it in Chiangmai, where the banks are bigger... and have more senior staff... because the key is that someone in the bank must be able to sign on the bank's account in the currency where you want your draft.  That means for a British Passport, they need a signatory on an account in Hong Kong.

Difficult?  Oh no, the change to the new system was made for the customer's convenience!

To get a banker's draft you need the HQ(Head Quarters) branch of the bank, in our case the closest is Korat(Nakhon Ratchasima).

You can use a credit card to pay for the new passport, there's a authorization form on here too.

I am sure all of us will be happy to hear when you complete the process and get your valuable passport.  moneysmile

Yes, easy if you have a credit card;  I don't.

I'm sure you'll all be happy when I get my passport;  you must be even more fed up with it than I am.

All is not lost. I too had my Krung Thai card refused.

I gave them my Bangkok Bank Card number(also Debit card with "Visa" logo on it) and it was accepted.

Seems Krung Thai are issuing ATM cards with "visa" logos on them but are not giving the Debit card facility.

Just got my new passport from Hong Kong. It really is very simple:

Download application form from internet. Just Google "British Embassy Hong Kong".

Get some photos taken. Follow directions on this site: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Passports/Applicationinformation/DG_174152

Get one of the photos signed on the back.

Complete the credit card form. I used my debit card issued by Bangkok Bank.(Krung Thai cards are not acceptable for some reason). Ask for a deduction to be made for return post from DHL.

Send application by EMS from Buriram post office(400 baht). Application form,2 photos, credit card form and copy of photo page of passport. Do not have to send passport.

I sent mine on Friday 14th January and got it back on the 26th.

No problems.

Twelve days is pretty quick!

That was with a 2 day delay due to the fact that my Krung Thai card was rejected.

I recieved a very good service. As soon as my card was rejected I recieved and email explaining. They also attached a new card authorisation form to give new card details.

I sent that off by email and had payment conformation the same day.

Overall a very good service.

I forgot to add that due to the current exchange rate this passport was cheaper than the one I got from Bangkok 9 years ago.

I suppose they get used to dealing with people with a dodgy credit history :)
