It is stupid to say that you will not keep money in Thailand anymore - you are attacking the symptom and not the cause of your 'problem'. It is also likely to cost you more in the long-run.

For those staying long time it makes more financial sense to fund a Thai bank account periodically from the UK (in the case of the OP).

You can transfer Sterling online with the Halifax Bank for GBP 7.50 a time and, for example,  a Kasikorn Bank charge of 0.25% min 200 Baht + 20 Baht.
 
Using ATM cards to withdraw directly from UK accounts becomes expensive very quickly now that Nationwide have removed the free service.

I wouldn't expect a bank manager or ex-bank manager to be objective! I don't normally take cheques indeed, I can't remember the last time I did hence the advice! If it can be done in other countries it can be done in Thailand! There are other reasons for keeping money outside of Thailand, this is just one and it is not a stupid idea!

For anyone to try and defend 30 to 45 days clearance defies logic. Don't give me excuses because that's what they are. I can be done but it is not in the interest of the bank to do it!

Jamie once again you fail to read or understand. The practices are archaic - NOT the Thai bank's actions.

I agree there are very good raesons for keeping money outside Thailand - my post was based on cost on not using a transfer mechanism that does not suit you.

Incidentally, there is no one more objective that a gamekeeper turned poacher. They don't defend anything for the sake of it - they simply state the facts and explanations and offer practical work-round solutions.

Coffee Corner, a bit of tongue in cheek, no offence intended. The banking system in Thailand is certainly biased! Even when I was in Papua New Guinea last year financial transactions were simple as they need the customers and money!

I'm sorting out an off-shore account, worth it in the long term.

Dealing with Thai banks can be difficult and is often down to you talk to/get on with (in fairness the UK can bea bit like that as well!).

In Prakhonchai we are lucky that the local Kasikorn Bank is Farang-friendly and at least one guy in there can't do enough to try and help.

I was just trying to point out that the system is the same in UK, Thailand and Papua New Guinea - what differs is how each local bank handles the transaction, most notably WHEN they give you value for the cheque.

Good luck with the offshore account, there are plenty of choices and HSBC are as good as any. my only advice would be to consider exactly what your Thai Baht currency needs are and work out the best transfer systeM from there.
