How to watch BBC iPlayer abroad

It’s fair to say that the BBC has a stellar reputation around the world for the quality of its TV programmes. The problem is, its iPlayer catch-up service is only available in the UK, so if you’re a Brit abroad you’re stuck.

While it’s always been possible to tunnel into the iPlayer from outside the UK via a Virtual Private Network, the average user would probably find this too much hassle to set up, and VPNs often charge a monthly fee. To solve the problem, a new free app called Expat Shield has launched this month from AnchorFree, the same stable as Hotspot Shield which offers the same service for US users.

Aimed at expatriate Brits, this Windows app (supporting XP, Vista and Windows 7) assigns a UK IP number to your Internet connection, meaning that when you connect to the iPlayer website, it thinks you are in Her Majesty’s kingdom, when in actual fact you’re on the beach in Spain or maybe at a South Pole research station.

Installing the software is a cinch, although you’ll probably want to uncheck the option to additionally install the “Expat Shield Community Toolbar” as it’s not a necessary part of the service. When I installed the software, I got a warning that the software hadn’t passed Windows Logo testing, which guarantees that it’s fully compatible with the operating system. If you get this warning too, be aware that there’s a slight chance of some kind of system instability as a result of using it, although I used it with no problems.

Once installed and launched, it’s as simple as clicking the “Connect” button and your Internet connection is instantly diverted via a VPN which will fool iPlayer, and any other website, into thinking you’re in the UK. This is just as useful for other country-locked websites and services like Spotify.

Expat Shield is free to use and is supported by ads that are displayed when you connect and disconnect from the service.

The license agreement for the Expat Shield states that it is only for use by expatriate Brits. While there’s nothing to stop anyone in the world installing and using it, it’s clear that AnchorFree is covering its back against accusations of helping users break the terms of the services it helps users access.

With the BBC having promised a worldwide version of iPlayer aimed at Brits abroad by next summer, it may not be necessary to use a VPN in the future. For now though, Expat Shield is a simple solution to a common problem

Link for Expatshield....http://www.expatshield.com

I have been using the expat sheild now for a few months......it does have some problems . smilenod
One of the problems is the constant pop up adds that come up whilst using Expatshield ( it has to gets its income from somewhere )
I am not an expert but have found it is best to use the Expat shield  on Google chrome and if you go into the Jake TV site you can download the addblock for Google chrome ..http://www.jaketv.co.uk/splash.htm
I use a 12call and a telephone as a modem so its to slow to stream the BBC TV but I can listen to all the live BBC radio programs which includes 5 live for football,Rugby and so on.( The programs that the BBC won't normally let you watch and listen too )
I would also recommend you only use the Expat  Shield  when you are just watching the BBC iPlayer or listening to BBC Radio, as the article above says there can be some chance of some kind of system instability as a result of using it.I've had no big problems so far apart from being pestered with pop up add on other browsers whist using it and Opera shutting down a few time but just click on the icon are it starts back up again from where you were. biggreen

PS If any members have other ways of watching and listening to live BBC for free, let us know how . thumbup

Cheers Admin biggreen
One other thing......When I used it this weekend for the live football the iplayer kept saying "not available in your area"  ???
I then checked the IP on  http://www.ip-adress.com/ and it was an American IP and not a UK IP number which is useless if you want to listen to the live football on BBC 5 live . madbar
I found by logging out a few times and logging back in on the Expat Sheild and keep checking the IP until a UK IP is allocated to you  pray1 .Sometimes it takes a few goes but what do you expect for something that's free..  smilenod

After reading about Richard Keys and Andy Gray ,who left their jobs after a sexism row from Sky Sports ( http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/08022011/58/premier-league-gray-keys-land-new-jobs.html ) I read they will now have a program on Radio Talksport starting on the 14th of February.
After trying to find if I was going to be able to listen to Sport Talk Radio for my PC I found this site.....
http://www.livestation.com/account/streams/1252599-talksport__uk_radio_station
I then down loaded the Livestation Desktop Player .Even with just my 12call sim  and telephone moden I found you can watch live BBC news,AlJazeera,Euronews( In many different languages ) plus radio stations like BBC world Service and others.Plus its all for free and you don't have to change to a UK IP address either  thumbup

More news
Once you have downloaded the Livestation Desktop Player you can then join up to the Livestation site.
https://www.livestation.com/account/login
This is done just like joining a Forum, once your email address has been verified you can then enter the site.Once joined  go to MY CHANNELS and then click on 'Browse all channels'.You can the browse through 100's upon 100's of free TV channels and by clicking on the Add to my play  these TV Channels are then automatically added to your Desktop Player. This includes free ITV and Channel 4 TV channels from the UK but a UK IP address must be used to view these channels ( Expatsheild )
There are so many channels to choose from ,which include Music,News,Film and sports channels. This is the first free TV site that I have found that works with my 12call and Telephone modem system and is ideal for those who don't have True TV or other satalite TV stations and want to watch some western TV for FREE thumbup

A few reviews of Livestation TV

http://www.reviewstream.com/reviews/?p=75466

Hello,
I will be reviewing a software in which will allow you to watch tv channels on your computer via the internet. This software is called Livestation and is freeware and comes with many channels. I will discuss the interface, number of channels, variety of channels, and an overview.

The interface of the livestation software is a interface in my opinion that is a rather great one. I like the channels being listed below my viewing screen so i can search through channels while i still have a show playing in the background. One thing i will say though is that on some channels if you go into full screen mode the picture quality will be somewhat off. As in you will see little squares coming through the picture. This could be caused due to my internet connection and this may not happen to everyone.

The livestation software comes with a number of “partner” channels and livestation comes with a number of channels that are submitted by the user.

The variety of channels is pretty good, although I have found some channels on their that are simply clips where if you were on say…ESPN and then you went to BBC then back to ESPN, ESPN would start from the same place it started from the first time. Every partner channel appears to be news related and, some channels come in different languages i.e English, french, and German. Not all channels have this though only a few. When you get into user channels they can put basically anything on their feed that they want to. Their is a search box where you can type in a type of channel you want i.e news, and the search engine will bring up all the channels that are news related or you can simply type in a channel you are looking for and see if they have it. One more thing you have to register through livestation in order to view channels upon downloading software.

Overall i like this software and consider this a good software if you enjoy hearing about news events from around the globe.

Rating: 9

When desktop apps become web apps, the result is usually happiness. That’s how I feel about Livestation, an online TV service we last reviewed in 2008. The site’s made huge strides since then, of course, offering streaming news stations from within your browser as well as expanding its players to many platforms. Whether you own an iPhone, a Blackberry, a Playstation 3 or even a Boxee box you can get live streaming news with this app.

In my recent article about websites where you can watch news online I mentioned that Al Jazeera offered 24 hour a day streaming news. It makes sense, then, that Al Jazeera is offered at Livestation, but what I wasn’t prepared for were the other stations offered here. Let’s take a look around!
Head over to Livestation’s web site and you can start watching streaming news immediately. This is a huge improvement over the previous model, which required users to sign in before they could do so.

On the web you’ll have access only to Livestation’s partner stations. These include:
Al Jazeera, English and Arabic
BBC World Service (Radio Only)
BBC World News 24
BBC Persian
France24 (French, English and Arabic)
NasaTV (live feeds from space missions!)
UN TV

There’s more, of course; check out the full list of official stations here and start watching immediately. The formal partnerships Livestation has with these stations ensures they will be online 24/7 (or when available for stations like NASA that only broadcast during events.) Overall, Livestation’s web interface is a great way to quickly find a news broadcast to watch.
Desktop Client

But of course Livestation is more than a website. There’s a very nice desktop client available. It works for Windows, Mac and Linux computers, and has improved a lot since 2008. For example, the service now offers picture-in-picture:
Another cool feature is the “carousal,” a slick interface that makes for quick browsing of your channels:
The desktop also gives you access to the many user-generated stations Livestation offers. These streams are similar to services such as UStream (check out this article for more information on starting your own broadcast with UStream.) Because these streams are unofficial, and frequently pirated, they tend to go down a lot. Still, it’s nice to have access to more content and these streams certainly deliver that.

Another new feature is the ability to pay for premium channels, including CNN International and Bloomberg. This is probably useless if you have cable, but could prove interesting for those who only want to pay for stations they actually watch.
Other Clients

If the web and your desktop just aren’t enough don’t worry: Livestation offers many ways to access it’s content, including:
The (new) Boxee App gives you access to live news from your TV.
iPhone Apps for Al Jazeera, CNBC and BBC New Streaming. Click here for more information.
A Playstation 3 Compatible page at ps3.livestation.com. Read more here.
A mobile page for smart phones, and apps for Blackberry coming soon.

Naturally the site keeps adding new services, so check frequently to see what’s being added.
Conclusion

I don’t have cable TV, so to me this is a wonderful addition to my web TV lineup. What I really love is the sheer diversity of ways to access the content, and the international nature of the content.

Can you find a use for a program like this? Do you like the changes Livestation’s made since our most recent review? As always comments make me happy, so do your part and say something!

Happy viewing

Watching the BBC iPlayer is possible but only pre-recorded show on the TV and Radio selections. To watch live TV or listen to live sport on the BBC radio you must have a UK IP number
As we all have Thai IP numbers you must download a IP changing softwear to give you a UK IP..the best one i have found is Expatsheild.I did write a post on this site all about it but can't find it ...Heres the site review and the download link
