Huawei showcases latest 3G equipment

Huawei whetted the appetite of Thai consumers by showing, but not selling, a variety of 3G equipment at the 3.9G Human DNA event.



The highlight was the Huawei S7 7" Android tablet. Huawei does not sell its products under its own name in Asia (but does in Europe) and a spokesperson explained that if it does go on sale, it would be branded as an AIS, Dtac or TrueMove S7 tablet and is likely to be sold for under $15,000 (457,000 baht), considerably less than the other Android tablet everyone is talking about.

Huawei also had many dongles on display, which came in all shapes and sizes _ literally. The e2010 3G dongle is a sphere, like a football, which was made to cash in on the World Cup football craze. The fastest device they had on display was the HSPA+ 21 MBPS E182e.

Huawei also had on demonstration a mock-up of their e-City software.

Smart traffic goes beyond just GPS and has real-time information on traffic and accidents en-route. Safe cities are all about CCTV networks that are routed real-time to a central command centre that can send information to public safety units such as police straight to their 3G phones or other communications equipment.

E-Health solutions use 3G to link real-time vital signs of patients to hospitals so doctors can see anomalies and coordinate emergency services if something happens.

Finally Huawei's e-City software has city management for the mayor or governor to take in news on air quality, appearance and other environmental information through a 3G based sensor network.

Huawei's e-City software is not just a concept, as it has already been rolled out in a few cities in mainland China, including Nanjing. The spokesperson said that like its mobile hardware, Huawei partners with telcos such as China Mobile to roll out these solutions and bid for government contracts.

In Thailand, Huawei is talking to ToT as it is currently the only one with a commercial 3G network capable of supporting the Huawei e-City solution. There is interest in rolling it out in the deep south but the lack of competition on 3G means that progress in getting the solution to market has been slow.
