When it comes to range-topping C-segment saloons, the Civic was always the one to beat. Can the latest Lancer unseat it?

For those wanting the most out of a C-segment family car, there are always the 2.0-litre range-toppers to choose from. True, they only take up around 10-15% of total sales in their respective lineups, but they are worthy cars to drive and own if money isn't an object. And for the manufacturers themselves, such cars are crucial image-boosters.

Ever since the latest Honda Civic rolled into the Thai market, it has set benchmarks in performance, interior space and ergonomics. It was also an easy car to drive, if not the best handler.

Mazda came out with the 3 that scored on style and handling. But as we found out during a shootout between the 3 and Civic, the Mazda still isn't better overall as it lacked performance and comfort.

Another contest for the Civic was challenged by the Toyota Corolla. But it appeared that the utterly comfort-oriented Toyota simply lacked spice in aesthetics and driving experience to be a true range-topper.

That's quite a remarkable feat, then, for the Civic as it has now well passed mid-life with an all-new replacement lurking in the horizon in about a year.

So, can the Mitsubishi Lancer EX - the latest entrant in this segment (aka compact car) - be a better car than the Civic in 2.0-litre form? Let's see.
