An air-conditioning machine at an insurance company exploded yesterday, killing one mechanic and injuring two other workers, police said.
compressor from an air-conditioning machine at Deves Insurance Co in Bangkok exploded as the three visiting mechanics were performing repairs, police said.
Boonma Kaewpuang, 45, died from his injuries while Prawit Damnuadee, 40, and Samang Pongburut, 52, also severely wounded, were taken to hospital by a company security guard.
The mechanics had been called to repair the machine on the 2nd floor of the company on Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue.
As they were working, the compressor exploded. Manop Sabua, a guard, found the workers covered in blood, police said.
Officers inspecting the area found five compressors were damaged and 10 nearby windows were broken.
The three victims work for an air-conditioning repairs company which sent mechanics to Deves Insurance Co after being told that one of its air-conditioners had malfunctioned.
Thirawat Taijam, the mechanics' supervisor, told police the machine flaw was caused by fluid leaking out of the compressor.
His staff were welding together parts of the machine when the blast occurred.
He suspected the mechanics might have failed to release all the fluid before welding.
A spark from a welding torch could have set the fluid alight and caused the explosion, he said.
