Young’s Scampi Scam

Seafood firm Young’s is to axe 120 jobs at its factory in Dumfries and Galloway, moving them to Thailand.Hand peeling scampi could be done cheaper at a plant owned by its sister company, Findus, Young’s said. That means the fish will be caught in the UK, then shipped to Thailand for de-shelling before being returned to the factory in Annan for further processing and packaging.

Environmentalists say the plan is absurd. “Very little could better sum up the environmental madness of modern globalisation than the 13,000-kilometer round trip that will be taken by Young’s scampi,” said Duncan McLaren of Friends of the Earth Scotland. Supermarkets’ demands for cheaper products were being met by food companies through “shipping goods halfway round the world and taking advantage of lower cost, poorly paid workers in developing countries”, he said. “Meanwhile the environmental impacts, even of sea freight, stack up – in this case perhaps as much as 50,000 tonnes a year more carbon dioxide emissions,” he went on.

T&G union industrial organizer for Dumfries and Galloway John Holroyd described the move as “global capitalism gone mad”. He said: “While there’s no doubt that Young’s can save money by doing this, they are simply exploiting workers in another country. “It’s a symptom of the supermarkets putting pressure on the country’s food producers.” The firm employs 1,800 people in Scotland.
