BMA rolls out bicycles for tourists

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has dusted off a plan for bicycles to be made available for tourists to enjoy Rattanakosin Island on two wheels.

BMA Deputy Governor Taya Teepsuwan yesterday said the project was aimed at visitors who enjoy cycling to historical sites and cultural venues.

She said the bicycles would be offered to tourists free of charge and the scheme could be seen as a way to help fight global warming.

The bikes would be available from 10am to 6pm on weekdays and 10am to 8pm on weekends at bike service locations at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, City Hall, Santi Chaiprakan and Saranrom parks.

Ms Taya said the BMA plans to expand the bicycle service to cover the Thon Buri side of Bangkok later this year.

The BMA launched the bike project when Apirak Kosayodhin was governor but it was unsuccessful.

After his resignation in November 2008, MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra, another Democrat Party member, became Bangkok governor, giving the bike scheme a new lease on life. THAI NEWS AGENCY
