Thai football fans in trophy match clash

Violence mars King's Trophy match

Fans injured after clashes triggered by Port supporters who invade pitch

Violence marred the King's Trophy match between Thai Premier League champions Muang Thong United and FA Cup winners Thai Port at Supachalasai stadium yesterday.

Several people were injured after clashes triggered by Port supporters who threw firecrackers and objects on to the pitch after Muang Thong scored their second goal.

Play was stopped when Muang Thong were leading 2-0 as Port refused to resume play to shoulder responsibility for the incident. The competition itself was also hit by harsh tackles.

The Kirins were declared the winners in the traditional match before the new season starts between the league and Cup champions. The new league season kicks off on March 13.

The match was played before His Majesty the King's representative. After a scoreless draw in the first half, Muang Thong went ahead in the 66th minute after new signing Kone Mohamed of Ivory Coast found the net.

Port then piled pressure on the league champions but Muang Thong goalkeeper Kawin Thamasatchanan was in good form.

Ten minutes before time, Muang Thong got their second goal when Dagno Siaka headed the ball home from close range.

Port fans then invaded the pitch and seized a Muang Thong flag prompting their fans to go on to the pitch to fight with Port supporters.

Several people were hospitalised.

The best way to explain the excitement and noise for today's game is to say it matched any local derby in the UK. For the first time, Muangthong opened the upper West Stand of the Thunderdome, allowing a total of 21,000 fans into this game. A sea of red and an oasis of light blue covered the entire Impact Arena area with noise and colour. All fans were searched before entry but the mood was good. This was a special moment for Thai football and we could feel it. Like most fans, I was excited but nervous for my team.
