Foreign husbands good providers in Thailand, survey says

Bangkok - Foreign husbands of women from Thailand's Buriram province are pumping 230 million baht (6.7 million dollars) into the local economy each year in remittances and spending, a recent survey of the income-generation of mixed marriages revealed Friday. According to a survey of 967 mixed marriages registered in Buriram province, 300 kilometres north-east of Bangkok, foreign husbands have proved good providers for the local economy, the Bangkok Post newspaper reported.
Statistics expert Saijit Klutanont estimated that 66 per cent of Buriram women married to foreigners had moved overseas and remitted between 10,000 to 20,000 baht (294 to 588 dollars) back to their families each month.
The remaining 329 couples lived in Buriram, where much of the foreigners' monthly incomes of 50,000 to 80,000 baht was pumped into the local economy.
Most of the foreign husbands were British, followed by Germans, French and Italians, and the majority were aged 51 to 60, the survey found.
Most of the women cited "a better life and financial security" as their main reason for marrying a foreigner.
Buriram is one of Thailand's less prosperous provinces. There are no national statistics available on the total number of mixed marriages in Thailand and their overall contribution to the gross national product.

I wonder what they mean by registered, how do they acquire that info? I am not aware that I have registered anywhere unless they accumulate it via visa applications and renewals. Do they mean Buriram City or Buriram Province?
 
Wonder whether I am a statistic? Just hope the Boss Lady does not read this or she will want an increase in her allowance!

They also found Foreigners like to drink beer as well however further investigation reveal that have 1 farang in Buriram likes to drink "archa" beer as well.

BURI RAM : Foreigners married to local women in Buri Ram generate a capital inflow to the country of 230 million baht a year, according to a recent survey.

The survey discovered there were more than 960 local women married to foreigners in 21 of 24 districts in Buri Ram, and these mixed marriages have boosted finances in the province.

Provincial statistics expert Saijit Klutanont said that according to her research, Khu Muang district had the highest number of mixed marriages with 163 couples.

Up to 66% of the 967 couples surveyed had moved abroad with their husbands. The rest had stayed in Thailand.

Most of the foreign husbands were British, followed by Germans, French and Italians. They were aged between 51 and 60 and had incomes ranging from 50,000 to 80,000 baht a month.

Ms Saijit said a better life and financial security were the main reasons why many northeastern women said "I do" to farang men.

On average, Thai women who stayed with their farang husbands overseas sent 10,000 to 20,000 baht each month to their families, according to the research.

That adds up to over 230 million baht coming into the local economy a year.

Ms Saijit said there were no signs of a decrease in the number of Thai women who chose foreign men as husbands.

But to prevent their dream marriages turning sour, she suggested that women thinking of marrying a foreigner do a check on the backgrounds of their husband-to-be and their health records.


I particularly like the last sentence ..  after all you don't want to be lumbered with him for too long before you collect on the life policy


Mind you it is a well known fact that farangs who drink copious amounts of Archa live a long if somewhat inebriated life
