The Thai Webmaster Association (TWA) is encouraging internet service providers to ramp up speeds and lower service rates after tests showed that their broadband speeds were lower than what they advertised.

"Broadband speed was just 80% of what they claimed in advertisements,'' said Pol Col Yanapol Yangyuen, the association's president.

He said the result was based on tests done by the TWA and the Thai Telecommunications Consumer Protection Institute (TCI) via www.speedtest.or.th from Aug 24 to Oct 25.

For example, he said, if a user subscribed to a service claiming a 10 Mbps rate, the actual speed was just 8 Mbps.

He said that 846,737 broadband users participated throughout the two-month test. While download speeds were 20% lower than claimed, upload speeds were far lower.

Among all ISPs, Samart Corp offered the best services with both download and upload speeds almost the same.

For True Corporation, he said, download speed averaged 8 Mbps while upload speed was just 1 Mbps.
Triple T Broadband which provides the Max-net service, delivered 78% of advertised download speed, Internet Solution and Service Provider 70%, CS Loxinfo 69%, TOT 68%, I-Net 64% and CAT Telecom 51%.

Pol Col Yanapol also said that each ISP needed to improve service quality, and in particular to narrow the gap between download and upload speeds.

Can you get a temporary wireless broadband connection for a month or so to suit a laptop and if so what is the cost and the download and upload speeds?  I should state this will be operated in Buriram.

I am an IT retard, but there is a stick you can buy in IT Relax shop in the night market that you can plug in a USB port you can then download a few hundred bahts worth of time via your phone that is valid for a month at a time.

Depending how competent you are at IT you can do it yourself or the shop will do it for you. A friend uses this method and is satisfied with the speed.

All other options require signing for 6 months or more with a provider.

Yes you can get a usb that works through cell phone service, they have a data chip that give a fair service. Or you can get a CAT EVDO and get good service. both are about the same per month, 900 baht, but the CAT usb is slightly higher to buy but works a lot better. You can use both all around thailand. signal is fair for cat in large towns, and in the village you need an antenna.

Cat have just brought out a new improved (thier words not mine) Dongle (Stick) that is stronger and may not need an Antenna.
I picked up a leaflet last week about it in Surin Office.
