Heavy rain to hit this week

Cold weather from China and low pressure in the Gulf of Thailand will combine to cause widespread rainfall in all regions of the country this week, the Meteorological Department says.

The high pressure system from China will clash with relatively hotter weather in Thailand from today until Thursday, bringing heavy rain to the North and Northeast. Low pressure will cause the same effects in the eastern, lower central, and upper southern regions, the department's latest forecast said.

People living near areas prone to mountain run-off in eastern provinces were warned about possible flash floods.

In many provinces numerous villages have been inundated for weeks due to previous storms dumping heavy rain.

In Nakhon Ratchasima's Phimai district, overflow from the Moon river is still making life tough for villagers. Farmers have watched helplessly as their paddy fields have been submerged.

The same has been reported in Chaiyaphum. Governor Wanchai Suthiworachai said all districts were inundated with over 200,000 flood victims.

In Khon Kaen's Muang district, villagers have had to travel by boat for two weeks due to overflow from the Chee river while some in Ubon Ratchathani's Muang and Warin Chamrap districts were living in flooded homes.

In the Central Plains, villagers in Nakhon Sawan's Lat Yao and Muang districts have suffered severe flooding. However, the situation is getting better in Ayutthaya as floods in several districts have receded greatly.
