Snap! You're caught  confused4
Fewer motorists run red lights now cameras have gone up at 30 city intersections,

Newspaper section: NewsCameras set up at intersections to catch motorists who run red lights are working well, traffic police say.

There has been a drop in the number of drivers caught running red lights in the nearly nine months since the Metropolitan Police Bureau installed its camera system at 30 intersections around Bangkok.

The cameras went up at intersections on Dec 30 last year.

About 2,000 vehicles a day were still caught running the lights up until June. But in the past three months, as motorists have noticed the cameras more, the number of offending vehicles snapped at the lights has fallen to about 1,400 a day, the police say.

"Some vehicles ran a red light two or three times in a stretch," said metropolitan police deputy chief Phanu Kerdlarppol.

The 500-baht fines have brought in revenue of up to 50 million baht, which has been shared equally between the metropolitan police and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.

A driver also loses 40 demerit points, deducted from a total of 100 on his licence.

Bangkok traffic police are happy with the result as they believe a drop in traffic light violations will lead to a drop in the number of road accidents, Pol Maj Gen Phanu said.

Since the camera system was put in place, the Metropolitan Police Bureau also has been able to cut the number of traffic police on duty. Another positive result was that traffic police no longer have to argue with motorists about whether the motorists jumped the light, he said.

But Pol Maj Gen Phanu said he still had one more concern. Some motorists have tried to obscure their licence plates, making it harder to identify the vehicles from photographs taken by the cameras.

Some motorists have used gold sheets to cover letters or figures. Others have scratched the colour off the characters.

Traffic police have been told to arrest motorists who make changes to their plates. The fine is up to 1,000 baht.

Pol Maj Gen Phanu said he had asked the BMA to install cameras at 30 more intersections in Bangkok, particularly those where accidents are common, such as on Rama IV and Sukhumvit roads.

A budget of 90 million baht will be needed.

Yes, but in the small villages aroung Buriram (e.g., Ban Yang) it seems about anything goes.  See people with a scooter drive up to a store and get a liter of petrol from a whiskey bottle and then get a shot of Thai Whiskey.   party5  You can smoke in store, and probably the resturants there.

Reminds me more of America during the 60's, but with some modern comforts like internet.  party11

It has been illegal to smoke in Air-conditioned restaurants here for about 12 years but rarely enforced. The more recently passed law regarding smoking in air-con & non-air con bars & even open bars has indeed been enforced by Banglamung police as smokers have found out by being fined 2,000 baht each & the owners 30,000baht.
