Enjoy your trip

I remember seeing posts from BeerLeo before. If my memory serves me well, this is his job. He's involved in some kind of engineering maintenance on cruise liners.

thx @Gerry.

Didn't know that.

I wonder then what he did during the time the Cruise liners weren't going because of the Covid Lockdowns.

I recall reading that lots of people who worked on Ships were stuck because they couldn't be replaced with new crews because of the lockdowns/airline problem

I work for Norwegian Cruise Line and been part of the new building team taking out five of our newest ships, Norwegian Breakaway, Getaway, Escape, Joy and Bliss. For the past three years I have been assigned to Norwegian Bliss as Chief Refrigeration Engineer, my rotation schedule is 12weeks on and 12 weeks off. During the pandemic outbreak our home port was New York and as you might remember one of the hardest hit places in the world. NCL's ships was taken out of traffic middle of March-2020 and I remained onboard for 50 weeks as one of the essential crew to ensure that the ship was maintained and ready for restart once CDC opened for cruising again. Norwegian Cruise Line really did an excellent job and treated there crew very good, or salary was reduced but fair and crew that got sent home given salary x  months depending on your position. We are now back in operation and have been following CDS requirements with less passenger capacity but slowly working our way back to normal. It looks like normal people really want to get back to cruising.

Happy Songkran to all of you, looking forward to get back home and have a cold beer or two, extending my contract with two weeks but will also extend my vacation.   party4

Thx @Beer Leo for that insight!!

I have seen (on TV that is) the Breakaway being build in a record time and then taken out for it's sea trials

Mighty Cruise Ships it was on I believe. Very impressive ships!!

For friends back in Europe going on a cruise is the only Holiday they really like (apart from Skiing) and they are really desperate to go again. We always wanted to go on a cruise but up till now we never did!

We have no idea if they are for us as we have never done one, so if we go, we will go on Short Trip, like Singapore -> Vietnam (but the funny thing is it will stop in Thailand as well 55555555555

So Singapore -> Vietnam -> Bangkok and disembark (saves a return plane ticket ;)

I've  been working out of Singapore, Hong Kong, Keelung, Shanghai and Laem Chabang in Asia.
My pick for Asia are as follow: The best cruise home ports Singapore and Hong Kong and the best destinations  Okinawa, Ishigaki  and of course any place in the Andaman sea. The most spectacular and beautiful palace I have ever seen is probably Halong Bay in Vietnam.

South Pasic: Best cruise homeport Sydney, best destination?? don't really know but my pick will probably be Fiji

Europe: So many good home ports: Barcelona, Venice, Stockholm, Copenhagen. Best destinations: Venice, Santorini, Istanbul, Edinburgh, Oslo, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Monaco and more. Most spectacular destination: The Norwegian fjords, Venice and Santorini.

South America: Best cruise home port: Rio and Ushuaia. Best destination: Rio, Buenos Aires, Manaus and Montevideo. Most spectacular: Antarctica and Amazonas

US and Caribbean's: Best cruise home port: New York, New Orleans, Seattle and Miami. Best destination: Cozumel and Curacao. Most spectacular: Alaska and Panama canal.

Most remote places I have ever been: Guam Micronesia, Antarctica and Svalbard between Norway and the North Pole

This is my picks and it's probably cruisers with completely different opinions, I have also always enjoyed the small ports and they are all very special with plenty good memories, some of them is not for a public forum.  ohmybar party4 party3 party2 love1

The most dangerous places I have been and where you can actually feel that you are being watched at ATM machines and on every street corner: Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City, Acapulco, Kingston, Guatemala City, Manta and Manilla but I have only been mugged in Lisboan.
I was also in Colon Cristobal  1989 and we could hear shoots fired and bullets ricocheting of the walls as we were making our way to a local water hole with some "working ladies" from Columbia.

Nice.

I told my friends in Europe about your job and they were jealous.

I always wonder when people use the word "jealous".

We all have choices in life. We choose our paths. Some of my old friends in UK say things like " oh I'd love to live there" or " looks like you're living the life". My reply, "you have a choice". "You can always do the same"

What's the point in sitting about being jealous? Get off your a$#es and do something about it.

They DO!

But both of them work and when they saw the pictures posted they said they always wanted to go there (Alaska that is) but never could because of time constraints!

So that is why they said jealous.
