Do you need four-wheel-drive?

Most of us would get by just as well with a two-wheel-drive and a little more ground clearance.

I think the best thing the pick-ups made is to bring the "pre-runner" / "plus" / "High-Lander" models which give height to the car.
Most people don't really need the 4 wheels drive expensive system.. They just want the height and comfortable view clearance.

I agree with the man. I own a Pre-Runner and what a great car it is. Living in Buriram I could probably get along with a normal car but we own land on the south-west side up a slight hill with roads used by many trucks and not very well maintained. Getting there is difficult even with a motorcycle but the high ground clearance of the Pre-Runner makes this journey a pleasure. You have to think very carefully before you go out and buy a 4x4. I see many of them driving around even in Bangkok. Just the fuel usage of these things should prohibit their use and it might even be good ideas for the government to grant a special license if someone wants buy a 4x4. I drove through most of Southern Africa (Mozambique, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia) with a Land Rover in all kinds of conditions and only on very few occasions was it necessary to use 4x4. Thick sand, mud and steep inclines. Even then you can get along with a good winch if you don't have a 4x4.

i live in a village near lahan sai . the road is very bumpy however I never needed to use the 4x4 system in my [old] hillux. my next car will be a normal pick up there is no need for the 4x4 and its not helping when driving on the road cornering etc especially when its a pick up.
saw some video showed the vigo hillux test in sweden show its very unsafe in emergency situations.

I have a Ford Explorer 4x4, needed the low gear ratio about 2 years ago, ended up with a transmission fault.

It is 1995 with over 196,000 miles on it, just needed 4x4 probably 3 times in 14 years.  So is probably not worth it.  However, will make getting rid of it easier.

Well, i dont agree with you.

Yes you need a 4x4 if you have to go to some land out in the bush. I was stuck with a 2 wheel drive and after i got the car out of the mud. I was covered with mud. If i had driven a 4x4 i was problaby nt that dirty.

Definition of 4 Wheel Drive:

A vehicle that gets stuck in more inaccessable places.   confused4

I heard this first in the 90's, reminded me of the time I high centered a 4x4 in the El Paso desert.  This means I went over a dune and all 4 wheels remained off the ground with the vehicle frame resting on the dirt.  So it did not drive anywhere
