Renewing an expired Thai license from another province
« on: June 08, 2019, 05:45:54 PM »
I looked at smoooth2's post from a few years ago and PolarAttack's more recent post, both regarding driver licenses.

I have neither an international permit nor a home country driver license; but, I have my old Thai driver license, issued in Chiang Mai, which expired on my birthday almost nine years ago.

I don't have a residency certificate; but, I have a yellow house book and a pink Thai ID card. Both have the address of our house which we moved into last month.

Two questions come to mind:

Do I need to bother with a residency certificate when I already have a pink ID and yellow book?

What are the odds of people smiling when they see my long expired driver license and then renewing it for another five years?

You won?t need a Certificate of Residence if you have your Yellow Book. You will need copies of your passport main page and visa page. Photos and a medical certificate.

Not having your home country license or IDP won?t be a problem.

You will be issued with a 2 year license when you apply and will have to do the tests and watch the video. After the 2 years then you will get the 5 year. Your previous license has been expired for to long to get a 5 year I think. Either way it won?t be a problem.

Update:  Last week we went to Land Transport and made an appointment for this week.

My yellow book was accepted. Nobody seemed to be alarmed by a license from CM that had expired nine years ago.

Today, I did the red light brake pedal test, green-yellow-red test, depth perception test, and peripheral vision test.
There was a two hour video, a one hour lunch, and two one hour videos.  All had English subtitles.

At 3:00 I started the written test. We were concerned about missing our train home and I was bumped to the head of the line.

I had one hour to do the test; I needed 15 minutes.  I'd read that I could give five wrong answers; my wife said I could make ten wrong answers.

I gave two wrong answers. The proctor looked shocked at my score of 48.

Tomorrow is the riding test at 1:00.  We'll go early to rent a motorcycle for the test.  We have a scooter, so tomorrow will be my first time shifting gears in several years.

Update:

I passed the test on a rented scooter. But, there was a problem online and the photo could not be taken and the DL issued.

I returned the next day.  I got five years + to my birthday.

They used my expired DL for the date of issue.  Issued:  2004  Expires:  2024  Very cool IMHO

My only regret is that I used my passport instead of my Thai ID.  The passport will expire before the DL; the Thai ID will not.
